February 14, 2007 - 9:51 AM Coming OneMy birthday is coming up! I'm going to be 1! Everyone also says that my new baby brother or sister is coming soon! I can't wait. I can tell them him everything works, and then they won't have to figure it all out like I did. Mom's getting really big, which I guess is normal, but a little scary looking!

January 7, 2007 - 3:21 PM Riding Instructions: Front Row SeatHi everyone!I haven't written in a while, but a lot has been happening. It's gotten really chilly lately and I have a piece of cloth put over me that makes me warmer called a "blanket". I’ve been watching the other horses going around and around in the ring in front of my stall, sometime jumping over funny sticks they call obstacles. Speaking of obstacles, I was led over this one called a "pole". My human dad, Dave, caught me by surprise, and before I knew what was happening, the stick was in front of me and I had to walk over it. Really didn’t have a choice! The second time I was ready. It seemed scarier, and I tried not to go over, but was forced too. The third time I knew there was no getting out of it, so I jumped it really big. Then I learned that it wouldn't hurt me so I just walked over it. Hey, no big deal. Here's a picture of me, taken by Ariel, my human sister. I'll keep you posted on the inevitable strange happenings that go on around here. Ciao, Bella |

October 4, 2006 - 9:03 PM Weaning Time - Where's Mom?!The scariest thing is happening around here. Now, I’m not in a stall with mom anymore! I know, it's very upsetting. I thought that they were taking me out for a walk, then mom stayed in the stall. They walked me across the barn and put me into a stall next to another horse named Duke. At first I thought they were just waiting to bring mom in, but then she didn’t come. I called for her and banged on the gate, but mom just ignored me and ate.

September 24, 2006 - 3:06 PM A Mess Gets BetterI'm writing with a sigh of relief. I had a close call recently - that's what everyone said. All I know is that my hoof and leg hurt very bad, I could hardly walk, they wouldn't let me out of my stall [the worst!] and after a lot of fussing, I seem to be back to my frisky self again.I'm not even sure what happened, I heard the word abscess. I had been having some trouble walking and my hoof felt funny and looked funny and the man that worked on my mom a few weeks ago, a blacksmith, came in and started on me. It was my back right and he filed my nail way down and I felt a bit better. But whatever was wrong wasn't done with me because it came back, and it was really scary. The worst part is that my human family was away at the dressage finals and I started to get really sick. They had a good friend keeping an eye on me - Connie could tell I was still not quite right - and that dear person spotted a swelling in my leg. She took my temperature - you know how they do that! - and then before I knew it the vet was there. Later I heard the family say they were so concerned and wanted to come home, but the vet assured them the antibiotics would do what they could - with or without them - and not to rush home. In the meantime I ended up with a terrible explosion of goop out of my heel! Honestly it was rather gross, but it felt better too and the swelling started to go down. As if this wasn't all bad enough, there I was, confined to my stall. I get very irritable when I can't get out and play - I don't care how bad I feel - so it was really the worst all around. I want to say thank you to Ressa, our vet and my family for being so good to me. I want to say sorry if I was ornery - more ornery then I've ever been - and how happy I am to be feeling better. You can see by the pictures that I'm on the mend - out in the pasture with my mom and grateful for something called duck tape [?] that put me back together enough to get me outside. I'll write more about this adventure - I've had enough for now, but I did want to let you know. And I hear I have a few fans that were missing my writing too - so this is for you who have an interest in what goes on in the life and mind of a very fortunate filly. Thank you. Life is good! August 6, 2006 - 4:24 PM Yummy grassStrange things have been happening. For the last few nights, I've been taken out in the evening, and made to stand around while mom eats grass. It is weird! The first night, I thought I’d stir things up and buck around, but was soon punished Then I learned that I couldn't win, and only bucked a little.

July 20, 2006 - 6:34 PM Farther from the GroundI'm going to take a moment from my busy day and say hello and let you know that I'm having a great life! If this is what it's all about, I'm very happy. We go out and play, roll, run, nip, jump, anything really. What do I feel like doing? Ok, I'll do that! What more can a girl ask for?

June 9, 2006 - 10:09 AM Schools InMy life is so busy I haven't written. There are a few interesting things to tell. For one I found a way out of my stall. That was fun for a minute. Actually it was a tiny bit scary as I rolled out under my stall door ending up in a tangle, then managed to get up and voila! I was out, looking in at my mom. The kids were sure surprised to see me standing there when they came in to feed. They hustled me back into where I belonged. A good thing, cause I was getting thirsty.I know I heard the children say that school's out, but for me it seems a never-ending string of lessons. It's fun though, don't get me wrong. I love new things. I do pretty well, as long as they don't scare me too much. I've had my hoofs picked at - Ariel likes to do that. I've had fly spray put on my ears - some very nice smelling stuff with marigolds. I still get lead around on my rope and we all seem to be getting better at that. Humans learn pretty quickly I've found. I did have a moment the other day that wasn't so nice. Ariel and I were walking along and all of a sudden this loud, whooshing sound came out right by my ear. I nearly popped out of my hooves. Later I found, after everyone stopped laughing [thank you very much] that Ariel had sneezed. Well, I didn't know! They said I cleared at least 6 inches. So every day's something new. Including finding out my mom is pregnant again. Oh boy someone to romp with next year! Ciao for now, Bella, |

May 5, 2006 - 10:37 AM My Photo ShootI've been so busy playing and exploring that I haven't written in a long time. To be honest, I’m still trying to figure things out. One day the humans are all smiles and hugs - they give the BEST back scratches - and the next I'm hearing words like ornery, spoiled and beast. Not being sure what these mean, I can only guess it's not too good because of the way they look and sound when they say it. Drat. It was going so well too.One of my favorite things is to chase the children around the paddock. Now that's really fun and they scream when I butt them with my head and then they take off running right away. Works like a charm every time. I have a feeling this is going to change though. They aren't running very far and now they're turning and giving me that stern look and voice. Although I'm feeling that sort of fun is coming to an end, I still had a great time today running my auntie around a little. She brought a man into the paddock with cameras and you could tell neither of them were expecting what I was going to do. I got some great reactions. It was precious and someone should have taken pictures. Wait, someone did! My buddy Andy showed up and took a few snaps. It was fun until they put me on a lead and tried to make me stand still. That was the end of the party for me - you can see here I wasn't amused anymore, and to be honest, my sweet auntie seemed at the end of her robe [and mine] by that time too. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Words like training, and not getting away with that behavior, were flying around and I think I'm in for a new adventure.... xo, Bella |

April 23, 2006 - 8:40 AM What?So I'm wondering what all the excitement is about. Hardly anyone is coming over to see me - a child here and grown up there, but mainly it's me and mom grazing and exploring our new paddock.I see Andy and Ariel over there polishing and cleaning and Pilot got a shower like nobodies business. They must have washed his socks for half an hour. Not that I have time to watch but it's a good guess. I still have important things to do like examine the grass. Maybe tomorrow things will get back to normal and I'll get all the scratches and pets I love so much. |

April 17, 2006 - 3:39 PM Birthday PresentsThe stream of people coming to visit is slowing down. That's not all bad I don't think. It's hard sometimes to come up with entertainment for so many. The hopping and leaping, nudging and turning circles is ok at first, then I want a nap.One benefit is that I now have 3 new halters and my mom has a new halter too. We are very pretty. That's what everyone says at least. I like my halter except it wacks me in the eye when I run or leap. I think whoever made this should wear it for a while and see if there's a better way. Next I'll be showing pics of my new paddock. Oh yes, it's good be green! |
